Adopt-A-School program

 ‘Adopt-A-School’ Program Description

 

  • The Adopt-A-School (AAS) program is an intensive music curriculum geared toward second grade students.  The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra provides resources and performance/concert opportunities to introduce classical music to students who otherwise might not be exposed to it. 
  • AAS is a 16-week curriculum focused on the symphony orchestra, classical music, and basic musical skills and concepts.
  • The program is meant to be collaboratively taught by a SLSO representative and the classroom music teacher.  Elements of each school district’s curriculum will be incorporated into the lessons.
  • During the 16 weeks students will:
    • Participate in 5 Instrument Demonstrations given by SLSO musicians at the school.  Students will meet the musicians, participate in interactive presentations and have the opportunity to ask questions.  One visit per instrument family: Brass , String , Woodwind , Percussion , and Conductor. 
    • Prepare for and attend an education concert at Powell Hall.
    • Develop ways to listen to , analyze , and describe music.
    • Participate in cross-curricular activities designed to reinforce multi-level learning ( Art , PE , Science and English lessons will be included in the curriculum.)
    • Learn musical concepts and skills as outlined in the National and Content Standards (as well as the district curriculum.)
    • Receive Instrument Playground kits with actual instruments the students can handle and explore. 
    • Prepare and participate in a culminating performance at a school assembly during which students will showcase skills and concepts learned through the AAS program.
